Chronology
Emilia Perez follows four remarkable women from Mexico, each striving for her own happiness
Cartel leader Emilia hires Rita, an underrated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live her true self. Carla Sophia Gascon talks about the two years of preparation for this difficult role in “Jacques Audiard”. and about the two extremes of her own personality, which she had to play in the roles of Emilia and Manitos. Jacques Audiard said that the idea of the musical was inspired by the chapter of the novel about drug dealing, who wants to change his personality.

Emilia Perez is a 2024 musical drama
with Zoe Saldana as Rita, a lawyer who does her job until a drug lord kidnaps her and demands a sex change. Along the way, we have Selena Gomez playing Jessie, the drug lord’s wife, who is adjusting to a new life with the children she raised with him after a gender reassignment she didn’t know about. Then, of course, we have Carla Sofia Gascon as Emilia Perez, a sex-changed drug lord who continues to build her (no longer “he”) empire. Most of the story is told through musical numbers, so if you don’t like this genre, stay away from it.
Why do I say “some”?
In particular, this film made a very strange impression on me after it ended, because I watched it as if blind, and to be honest, that’s what you have to do, because the film as a whole is very unexpected in places and also quite comedic. After the director and the cast of the film introduced it to us, the film started and the audience erupted in laughter and applause at certain aspects of the film, and I appreciate that. The film shines best with its stunning cinematography (which was, to put it mildly, mind-blowing), powerful acting by all actors, and some musical numbers. As for the musical numbers, this is because most of them are quite good and have an impact on the story, but as the film progresses, the musical numbers have become much less attention-grabbing than before, and because of this they have become clichés.
Rating: Opening Gala of the London Film Festival
The musical performance at the end, in my opinion, was boring, but I think it summed up the story to some extent. But don’t listen to me, because there is a movie for everyone, and I really liked some elements of this movie, and I think most of you will too when it comes out soon enough. Overall, although “Emilia Perez” is not presented as well as I had hoped, it is still a cinematic achievement in terms of musical numbers and great acting, which really makes the film even more fascinating and interesting. If you like musicals, try Emilia Perez, I think he successfully represents what the audience can expect from him.
