[telepathically] Eugene Allerton: I’m not gay
Chronology
In 1950s Mexico City, a forty-something American immigrant lives a solitary life in a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student inspires the man to develop a meaningful connection with someone. Ultimately, it was Daniel Craig who convinced Luca Guadagnino to cast Drew Starkey after watching audition tapes with Guadagnino and telling him “That’s the guy” after watching Starkey…
I’m not gay
Lee… William Lee: I know. Eugene Allerton: I’m incorporeal.
The film stars Orfei (1950)
It’s one of the most boring and pretentious films I’ve seen in years. Except for the soundtrack, which tries to breathe life into this contrived and outdated story of an old gay man on a depressing quest for the meaning of life. Very slow pace, pseudo-intellectual dialogues, caricatured representation of gays in the 1950s, the film gives the impression of wanting to show how lost gays were in those years.
Daniel Craig plays the anti-hero
A drug addict, sexually impotent, drifts in an unreal world, desperately looking for an anchor point. He is sad and pathetic. The film can be seen as a trashy version of Luchino Visconti’s famous masterpiece, Death in Venice.
It could be called Death in Mexico
After the much-loved These Days, These Nights, the director seems to have made a mistake in creating a new valuable work.
