American (English) remake of the French series HPI (2021)
Chronology
It follows Morgan, a single mother of three, and how her exceptional mind helps her solve crimes while reorganizing evidence during her shift as a cleaner at the police station. Despite her very high IQ, excellent memory, and deep knowledge of obscure subjects, Morgan makes a series of fundamental legal mistakes that anyone who has ever watched a legal show on television will know not to make. In the first episode, for example, she obtains from a locked safe at the suspect-victim’s law office a document that would never be admissible in court—illegally obtained evidence. It also cannot be used to obtain other evidence, which would violate the legal doctrine of “fruit of the poisonous tree.” In episode 2, she has to be reminded to wear gloves before handling evidence at a crime scene, and in issue #3, she removes all documented evidence from the police station, completely breaking the chain of custody and making whatever she removed no longer admissible in court. HPI Remake (2021). I waited 4 episodes, which gave the show plenty of opportunity to prove itself.
just in a different cover
It’s the same formula for every “detective”, “cop” or “lawyer” show. It’s more of a “light drama”. wither away from more realistic shows, but it’s still the same formula. It’s “The Finder”, “Elsbeth”, “So Help Me Todd”, etc… If it’s “based on a French series” it just means that the French are perfectly capable of using the same tired and hackneyed formula. The US is overusing it a lot, that’s all.
and that’s the problem
Male + Female “Detective” In the team, one is brash and reserved, the other is serious and usually they clash, but in the end they support each other. The clues are of a WONDERFUL nature and often nothing the viewer, any viewer, could ever understand… a show that has done this where the audience CANNOT understand the outcome because they are not aware of the wonderful (and hidden) clues to come – but which should have been there all along. 2-5 minutes of introductory main story… 30-35 minutes of random “case”. this plays out the same way as all the other cases…
wash, rinse, repeat
2-5 minute final main scene to add a cliffhanger for next week… Tired of this hackneyed formula. The premiere of this type of show can be interesting because it’s a set-up for the main story… but the formulaic pattern starts in episode 2… and then repeats itself over and over again for as long as the show is on the air – often the show is canceled long before the main story gets any resolution – which means the missing father in this show will NEVER get an answer or closure because it’s just a “spoof line” of stories to keep viewers engaged for the next week. Olsen and Sunjata do a good job, fitting in well with the characters…
which is hit or miss
some of the other cast members (mostly cops), not so much. And each episode basically has a huge guest cast… Overall, it’s a bubblegum cop show… not exactly terrible, but not very deep or complex in nature. I can see why some people might like it, but I’d be surprised if it sticks around for long.
